CSD sales are on the rise
For the 4 weeks ended 02/25/2023, CSD (carbonated soft drinks) growth was down 2.7%, which was below the 12-week trend (-2.0%). Dollar sales were up 15.6%, exceeding the 12-week increase by 15.1%. Meanwhile, growth in dollar sales of diet CSDs (+17.7%) outpaced regular CSDs (+14.7%).
Sales of energy drinks declined
In the energy drinks category, total volumes were up 4.0% (up 3.9% over the 12-week period). Dollar sales were up 14.1% year-over-year, surpassing the 12-week trend (+14.2%). Monster Beverage (MNST) sales growth in dollars (+12.1%) was lower than the category, while Red Bull also underperformed, with sales in dollars up 12.2%. In the most recent month, MNST’s year-over-year dollar sales were down about 70 bps, while Red Bull lost ~60 bps.
Bottled water sales declined
Total bottled water declined 0.4%, down slightly from the last 12-week period (-0.3%). Dollar sales were up 13.9%, down from the 14.2% increase seen in the last 12-week period. Over the past month, KO lost 80 bps of its year-over-year sales level, while PEP lost 60 bps.
Carbonated/non-carbonated water sales up
Total category sales were down 7.5% (slightly higher than the 7.6% decline seen over the past 12 weeks). Dollar sales were up 4.4%, down from a 12-week increase of 4.5%. Over the past month, KO lost 50 bps of its year-over-year dollar sales level, while PEP added 80 bps and FIZZ lost 50 bps.
Sports drink sales accelerate
Sports drinks volumes declined 0.9% over the last 4-week period, exceeding the 2.5% decline seen over the past 12 weeks. Dollar sales were up 15.1%, surpassing the 12-week increase of 12.0%. Year-to-date PEP sales fell 60 bps over the past month, while KO lost ~540 bps.
Juice sales have increased
Chilled juice volumes are down 5.5% over the past 4 weeks (above the 12-week trend of -6.7%). Dollar sales are up 3.4% over the last 4-week period, above the Q4 2022 trend (+1.8%). Year-to-date KO sales fell ~10 basis points over the past month, while Citrus World lost ~50 basis points.
Liquid tea sales accelerate
Liquid tea volumes are down 2.5% over the last 4-week period (in line with the 12-week trend), while dollar sales are up 10.0% (vs. +9.7% over the last 12 weeks). Over the past month, KO’s year-to-date tea sales rose 40 bps, while KDP lost 80 bps and PEP lost 150 bps.
Ground coffee sales (per serving) have rosen
Total category sales were down 3.2%, below the numbers seen over the past 12 weeks (0.9%). Dollar sales were up 4.8%, down from the 7.3% increase seen in the last 12-week period. In the most recent month, KDP’s annualized sales share in dollars rose 90 basis points, while J.M. Smucker maintained the same share value. Kraft Heinz lost 70 bps.
Sales of coffee (ready-to-drink) and salty snacks have been slowing
Total category sales were up 4.9% (vs. +7.8% over the past 12 weeks). Dollar sales were up 9.1%, down from the 10.3% growth seen in the last 12-week period. Starbucks’ annualized finished coffee sales rose ~190 bps over the past month, while KO lost ~280 bps and Danone added 100 bps.
In the salty snacks category, sales volumes are down 0.5% over the last 4-week period, below the 12-week trend (+0.1%). Over the past 12 weeks, dollar sales in the category are up 14.7%, including a 14.6 pt. gain in value for money. PEP added 20 basis points to snack sales year-over-year in February.
